About The Artist
In 1991 Leonid Gervits, successful art professor (He had been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg for 17 years.), left Russia for the United States. He found an enthusiastic audience for his teaching methods at the New York Academy of Realist Art and the Art Students’ League. His one-man show at Princeton University was a success.
His landscapes of the Long Island and New Jersey shore display a new type of modest, tasteful harmony, although his interpretation of these themes differs predictably from his rendition of the thriving southern environment (very attractive to Leonid), which he found in Florida.
Gervits’ series of large paintings “Caledonian Hunt I” and “Caledonian Hunt II” (1996–1997) are the results of the artist’s changing outlook on life in America. The very beauty of the world shown in these complex multi-figured paintings manifests an order of life that embraces inescapable destiny as a part of that harmonious picture.
At the same time, in his latest painting from the “Café” cycle, as well as in a series of Southampton (NY) landscapes, artistic language has become more expressive. Now, in his prime, Leonid Gervits is a proud representative of the great tradition.
